1、 Brief introduction of its history: e.g., when established, and so forth
The predecessor of the School of Economics and Business Administration (SEBA) was the Department of Political Economy at BNU, established in September 1979, with Professor Tao Dayong, renowned economist, as the first Dean. In June 1996, the School of Economics was created from the Department of Economics, and in March 2004, the new school was renamed the School of Economics and Business Administration.

3、 Distinctive Features of the School
Over three decades, the School of Economics and Business Administration has evolved into an important educational and R&D facility. Currently, SEBA has gathered a group of excellent teaching and R&D talents who comprise a structured academic group with solid scientific research capability. SEBA has established a relatively complete discipline cluster covering major fields in Economics and Management, forming a rather comprehensive hierarchy of courses.
There are 68 full-time teachers at SEBA, including 22 professors, 27 associate professors, and 19 lecturers. Among the teachers, 62 hold doctorates, which accounts for 90% of the faculty annually.
In addition, SEBA has invited dozens of famous professors and entrepreneurs from at home and abroad to be adjunct professors. Currently, there are seven departments, six undergraduate majors, twelve master authorization centers, two master specialist authorization centers, seven doctoral degree authorization centers, one circulating post-doctoral post, one national key discipline, one national key cultivation discipline, two Beijing Municipal key disciplines, and over ten R&D institutes.
Educational Economy and Management is the national key discipline, while World Economics is the national key cultivation discipline. As one of the first institutions doing economics teaching and research, SEBA has established a good academic team for educational economics marked by prominent research achievement and the cultivation of highly qualified talent, thereby establishing the School as a major base for talent and research in educational economics.
In 2007, Educational Economics and Management was honored as the national key discipline. World Economics is among the first Master’s and doctoral degree authorization subjects in China. Through thirty years of development, SEBA has developed a stable research orientation with distinction in fields including the basic theory of World Economics, International Finance, International Trade and Investment, and Various National Economies, maintaining a strong, high-level research team. In 2007, World Economics was honored as a National key cultivation discipline. In addition, the Ministry of Education named SEBA an innovative experimental site for basic talent training methods in the field of economics.
The experimental teaching center, which is a school key laboratory, has developed six laboratories, namely: Economics and Management Laboratory, Financial Simulation Laboratory, Electronic Commerce Laboratory, Economic Analysis Laboratory, Wireless Interactive Network Laboratory, and BNU-GATE Experimental Economics Laboratory, a joint venture with France.
SEBA has fully utilized multimedia channels and the Internet to promote education, with multimedia courses comprising 90% of the curriculum.
SEBA has established a solid talent cultivation system that focuses on the development of comprehensive abilities, awarding Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and doctorates. There are currently over 2,000 students, including 700 undergraduates, 300 doctoral candidates and research-oriented Master’s degree candidates, 700 MBA candidates, and 200 foreign students; and there are 2,000 night university students. Both the quantity and quality of students are among the top echelon at BNU.
Students in SEBA have made great achievements in many large-scale activities and have received many unrelated honors, including first prize in the Campus Costume Contest, championship of The Solar Cup Football Contest, and first prize in the Fengyun Cup Debate Contest. In recent years, some SEBA students have also been among the winners of the golden award of the National “Challenge Cup” Competition for University Students’ Business Plans. Concurrently, SEBA has been focused on establishing activities of national influence (e.g., the MUN competition in the U.S. and the National University Student E-commerce Innovation Competition), where its good organizational skills and students’ outstanding performance have helped foster the reputation of the School.
SEBA is devoted to establishing an international study and communications platform so as to enable students to broaden their international horizons and develop into broad-based talent with a spirit of international competitiveness, through participating in international exchanges, competitive activities, overseas investigation and internship, and interaction with foreign visitors, among others. SEBA attaches great importance to the internationalization of the School’s research function and cooperation with research institutes and universities in many countries, including regular seminars with GATE of UNIVERSITE LUMIERE LYON II and the Economics Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. SEBA has made clear progress and achievement in the internationalization of research methods and research levels in recent years, through activities including international conferences, teacher exchange visits, cooperative operations, and the introduction of foreign talent, among others. SEBA has hosted several foreign instructors, and the percentage of teachers with foreign degrees is about 20 percent. Also, the School has established World Economy and China, an international business Master’s degree program delivered in English.
Currently, hundreds of visiting scholars, advanced students and foreign students are studying at SEBA. SEBA has established an extensive foreign student exchange network with famous universities outside China’s borders, providing students with opportunities to participate in overseas communication and internship at American Disney World and with I.B.M., for example.
At the moment, there are seven departments: Department of Economics, Department of International Economy and Trade, Department of Finance, Department of Strategic Management, Department of Marketing, Department of Accounting, and six research institutes, including the Institute of Educational Economy, Institute of Labor Economy, Institute of World Economy, Institute of Economic Theory and Chinese Economy, Institute of Corporate Management, and Institute of International Finance.
Department of Economics
There are twenty teachers in the Department of Economics, including nine professors, eight doctoral supervisors, nine associate professors, and two lecturers. The major teaching and research areas of the department are Political Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics, Labor Economics, Educational Economics, and Chinese Economic Reform and Development, among others. Doctoral degrees in Political Economics, Western Economics, and Educational Economics and Management are among those granted by the department. SEBA has also achieved important academic status in research in Theoretical Economics, Labor Economics and Educational Economics, and related fields. The Department of Economics has established extensive academic communication and cooperation with foreign universities and research institutes. The undergraduate program in Economics is authorized by the Ministry of Education as the innovative experimental site for training basic talent in economics.
Department of International Economy and Trade
There are eight full-time teachers, three professors and doctoral supervisors, three associate professors, and two lecturers in the Department of International Economy and Trade, and there are two Master’s degree authorization centers and one doctoral degree authorization center. World Economics is the Beijing Municipal key discipline and national key cultivation discipline. Being the featured majors of the Ministry of Education, Department of International Economy and Trade has been sticking to the cultivation of personal qualities with emphasis on the featured education mode of solid foundation and extensive professional knowledge and multi-functional discipline. The Department of International Economy and Trade has established apparent research characteristics in fields including International Trade Theory and Practice, International Trade Affairs, International Investment, and Trade and Environment and etc.
Department of Finance
In this department there are ten teachers including five professors and doctoral supervisors, two associate professors, and three lecturers. The key research areas are International Finance, Monetary Policy and Financial Regulation, Corporate Finance, and Mathematical Finance. There is one Master’s degree authorization center and one doctoral degree authorization center. Teachers from the Department of Finance have been invited to take part in internal conferences in Zhongnanhai, at the People’s Bank of China and at the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, National Development and Reform Committee, and Ministry of Finance, for input into government decision making.
Department of Strategic Management
There are seven teachers in the Department of Strategic Management, including two professors and doctoral supervisors, two associate professors, and three lecturers. Six of these were awarded doctoral degrees by national and foreign key universities (three teachers were awarded doctoral degrees abroad). This department is mainly oriented toward the cultivation of doctoral candidates, Master’s degree candidates, and MBA candidates. It also provides strategic consulting services to the society. Its main research orientations are Corporate Management and Corporate Strategy and Operations Management, among others, while its research in Corporate Management and Corporate Strategy are of significant national influence.
Department of Marketing
There are eight teachers in the Department of Marketing, including one professor, three associate professors, and four lecturers. Seven teachers earned their doctoral degrees at domestic universities or foreign universities, and three have study experience abroad or have spent at least one year as visiting scholars. The main area of research and orientation here is marketing, including network issues, new media, and e-commerce. More specifically, these are network and new media consumer behavior, e-commerce and service management, network and new media brand strategy, global marketing and comparative study, market investigation and network marketing methods, venture investing and innovation, and regional cultures and management behavior.
Department of Human Resource Management
There are seven teachers in the Department of Human Resource Management, including one professor and doctoral supervisor, four associate professors, and two lecturers. All have doctorates, and two have overseas study experience. With different orientations in HR academic research and distinct classifications in teaching activities for undergraduates and Master’s degree candidates, the Department established the team cohesiveness with explicit orientation, complementary advantages, free and united atmosphere. The Department of Human Resource Management has established notable features and extensive influence in fields including Human Capital Theory, Humanistic Development and Management, Human Resource Strategic Management, Organizational Learning and Human Resource Development, Organizational Behavior and Cultural Development, and Population, Resource, and Environment Economics, among others.
Department of Accounting
There are eight full-time teachers in the Department of Accounting, including one professor and doctoral supervisor, five associate professors, and two lecturers. The main research areas are Financial Accounting and Financial Management, Cost and Management Accounting, Accounting Information Systems and Audit Informationalization, and Non-profit Organization Finance and Accounting. As to teaching and talent cultivation, on the basis of the deep cultural background of Beijing Normal University, the Department of Accounting focuses on the cultivation of humanistic and scientific literacy, while at the same time integrating the disciplinary advantages of SEBA Economics and Management to implement the development of a featured program with practical and bilingual instruction.
4、 Annual number of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral degrees
Recently, 180 Bachelor’s degrees, 95 academic Master’s degrees, 185 MBAs, and 25 doctoral degrees were awarded annually.
