I. Training Goals and Duration of Schooling

1. Master’s Degree Program
This major aims to develop talented students who adhere to the four cardinal principles: persisting in the reform and opening-up; develop morally, intellectually, and physically; obeying the law and being disciplined; and being of good conduct. They must have good knowledge of economic theory and expertise in world economic systems, with a good command of a foreign language and certain modern economic analysis methods and computer technology. After graduation, students can engage in  teaching and research in the field of population, resources, and environmental economics, can work in management in government departments, or can be active in the business of the real economy.
Master’s degree students have a flexible study period of two to three years, and those who complete the required credits and pass the examinations, and the thesis defense can finish within two or two-and-a-half years.

2. Doctoral Program 
This major aims to develop highly talented people who adhere to the cardinal principles: promoting the reform and opening-up; having good moral character; being ethical academically. They must have a solid foundation in economic theory and expertise in world economic systems, with good command of a foreign language and certain modern economic analysis methods and computer technology. Talented students are also trained to be familiar with academic standards and to be capable of doing independent scientific research. After graduation, students can engage in teaching and research in the field of economics, can work in management in government departments, or can be active in the business of the real economy.
The duration of schooling is three years, generally; four years for in-service doctoral post-graduates in Beijing who accept directed education or contractual programs; and five years for students who accept an ongoing academic project that involves post-graduate and doctoral study, or those who are enrolled as Ph.D. candidates directly from undergraduate programs.

Based on the theory of sustainable development, the issues of population, resources, and environment are placed in the framework of modern economic analysis and a comprehensive and systematic theoretical and empirical research approach is made.

Human Resource and Economic Development (Doctoral Program)

In the framework of the actual situation in China, conducting empirical research on the economic growth and income distribution effects of such human resource development activities as education and training, and on other issues related to human resources and economic development.

The basic theory and practice of the labor market and employment, including the structure and operation of labor markets, labor mobility, technological progress and employment, unemployment, training, wage determination, income distribution and social security, etc.

From the perspective of organizational behavior, studying the strategic human resource issues needed to be addressed by all types of organizations facing the challenge of market competition, and system innovation in human resource development and management, as well as operational strategies, operating techniques, and so on.
