1. Educational Objectives and Duration of Schooling
 

(1)Master’s Degree Program

he Master’s degree program is designed to cultivate the all-around development of specialized talent who have solid theoretical knowledge in economic science, management science, and educational science, a broadened academic view toward the social sciences, and a deep understanding of research methods in modern educational economics and educational finance, so they can adapt to the idea of socialist modernization. The program emphasizes a post-graduate’s ability to analyze and solve problems, which empowers the student to engage in independent teaching and researching, policy-making management activity, and related consulting work after graduation.

In addition to the strict specialized training, knowledge of, and skills in interrelated disciplines, including good command of the computer and other electronic teaching tools, a foreign language are also required.

A flexible schooling system of two to three years is in place. As a result, post-graduate students who can get all the required credits, be up to standard in results, and complete a defense of the thesis can receive a Master’s degree in two or two-and-a-half years.

(2)Doctoral Program

The doctoral program is designed to foster the all-around development of specialized talents with solid theoretical knowledge in economics science, management science, and educational science, with a broadened academic view toward the social sciences, and with a deep understanding of research methods in modern educational economics and educational finance, so as to adapt to socialist modernization. This program attaches great importance to the Ph.D. candidates’ pioneering and innovative abilities to analyze and solve problems, and to their good command and flexible employment of methodology and technology in academic research on modern economics and educational science, which empowers them to engage in independent teaching and researching, policy-making management, and related consulting work after graduation.

In addition to the strict specialized training, knowledge of, and skills in interrelated disciplines, including skills with the computer and other electronic teaching tools, a foreign language, and the ability to use a second foreign language for professional literature search are also required.

The duration of schooling is three years generally, four years for in-service doctoral post-graduates in Beijing who accept directed education or contractual programs, and five years for students who accept a continuous academic project that involves post-graduate and doctoral study and/or those who are enrolled as Ph.D. candidates directly from undergraduate programs.

(1)The number of undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral level students admitted in this major

Every year, approximately 180 undergraduate students, 95 academic post-graduate candidates, and 25 Ph.D. candidates for specialized doctoral degrees are admitted.

(2)Research projects undertaken

Scientific research is not only the basis of the talent cultivation center but also an important direction in the School’s development. Over more than thirty years, the School of Economics and Business Administration has established a relatively complete discipline system covering the main areas of economics and management, recently to include the national key discipline in education economics and management, the national key cultivating discipline in world economics, and four first-level disciplines: theoretical economics, applied economics, business administration, and public administration. In the past five years, the School has undertaken over 150 longitudinal projects, including projects supported by the National Social Sciences Foundation, the Natural Science Foundation, and provincial and ministerial-level governments, and has presided over three major projects of the National Social Sciences Foundation. Full-time teachers at the School have published more than 970 papers in the major domestic and foreign academic journals, with an average of 3.5 articles per teacher per year, among which over 300 articles were published in Social Sciences in China Press (SSCP), SSCI, and CSSCI. Over twenty research and/or teaching prizes have been awarded by provincial and ministerial governments. The School has an innovative research team in labor economics and educational economics that is responsible for the Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP) investigation database, and it has co-established with Canada the Chinese Youth Scholars Poverty Research Network.

(3)Major achievements in scientific research

Recently, more than 300 articles have been published in Social Sciences in China Press (SSCP), SSCI, and CSSCI, the School has presided over three major projects of the National Social Sciences Foundation, and over twenty research or teaching prizes have been awarded by provincial and ministerial governments.
